lovely vacationing

vacation is necessary for the brain to function properly at work for long periods of time. therefore, i went on vacation : ) a cruise. eric's first, my second. it was a blast. we went to catalina (cold and cloudy) and then to mexico (hot and sunny). we played putt-putt, ate lobster, went to comedy shows, drank and ate and then ate some more. it was very relaxing and much needed!

summer day trip

yesterday me&e took a little drive up the "local" coast. it was a simple lil trip consisting of only fort mac museum in san pedro and then to cafe rio in manhattan beach. we had no idea the drive (nor the day!) would be so beautiful!

first we stopped by the 5th street community garden to see the painted rocks that myself and the local youngsters painted. they line the path just outside the garden. looks so good!

then onto fort mac museum, where we started to have a little too much fun... love goofy moments with my boo.

then finally up the coast to manhattan beach. gorgeous drive! we had no idea. we just wanted to avoid the freeway but didn't realize we would end up in the middle of the beautiful palos verdes coast.

a surprisingly simply lovely day.

i recently took a day trip over to good ole yorba linda to have brunch with my brother, Jeff, at our favorite breakfast spot, the pancake house, where we both ordered the same thing we've ordered since we were little kids… the german pancake, loaded with powdered sugar and lemon juice… and i mean loaded!

and still going strong on my sugar high, i then went on a nice drive to the house i grew up in. i love this house. i would buy it in an instant if i could.

so anyways, quite the nostalgic day. brings up memories of my childhood… both good and bad but both are a part of my life, nonetheless.

so for *cough* valentine's day, me&e went hiking up to the hollywood sign and had ourselves a lil picnic... the weather was wonderful and you could just barely see the ocean. pretty darn good for LA. and the hike was just steep enough to get your body sweatin' ...only it just so happens that this past weekend, there were some clever people who decided to change the sign to read "save the peak". we're kinda bummed we didn't get see "hollywood" but still a fun(ny) memory.

first off lemme just say that i try to do a good thing and get my mugs secondhand... two for $3. then i take em home and my boyfriend tells me that he got these exact same mugs at ikea for like 50 cents each... go figure! learned my lesson. just kidding.

anyways, the mug on the left is just a little montage of cute lil faces looking in different directions (in case my sloppy pen paint job got in the way) and the mug on the right was inspired by the strawberry from 'across the universe'... such a great movie! such a great strawberry.

for some reason i thought it would be easier to hand sew two mini owls for the RVA craft class project instead of one regular sized one... i was wrong. so much fun though. it was still hard. haha but super cute. now i can keep one and give the other to someone else. and in some way, connecting two people over a large distance.

sometimes, you just need to be told what to do. i made a two-sided pillow for the RVA craft class (hand sewn! requires much patience)... one side tells me to CREATE (hand embroidered) and the other side tells me to be CALM (embroidered felt).

here is a necklace i made out of 2 different necklaces and some charms. i don't know if i will wear it cuz these types of necklaces actually get pretty tangled up really easily... and then just end up looking like a mess across your chest... no woman wants that!. but maybe i'll give this cutie a chance. maybe.

thanks to this craft class project from the girls over at red velvet art, i now have a place to store my completed "crafty goodness" from the class... and any others things i decide to make on my own accord. i went with a strawberry theme and decoupaged the side panels with cutouts of strawberries and put a red bow on the cover. the inside is separated so that small goodies... like bows, jewelry, etc... can be separated from the larger projects. still strawberry-esque, of course!

class just started so the box is pretty empty. but not for long, i'm sure.

i miss doing art with my hands and always "plan" on doing my own art projects after i get home from work but after 8 or so hours at the office, i usually just want to go running, make dinner, and throw myself down on the sofa and put on a good movie. so basically, i don't get much of my own art done... and its depressing.

but then along came this! an online craft class i found on my friends blog... just the creative "nudge" i have been looking for! i am so excited to get my hands down and dirty in some good ole arts and crafts supplies.

i will be posting all 30 of my projects on here, good or bad, so be on the lookout to "ooOOOoo!" or "eeeewwww!".

in attempts to break away from my digital world that i spend waaaaay too much time in, i got myself a holga camera. i love this camera. of course it did take me about an hour to figure out how to load the film.

the pictures are more of a 'surprise!' than anything. and that is exactly what i like about it. you can't 'undo'. it does take a lot of trial and error (so they say) to really master the artistic capabilities of the camera but gosh darnit it's fun. these are from my first role that i took at the nixon library in yorba linda yesterday... oh, and one of SoHo... of course ;) the vintage look of the images gives it a very nostalgic feel - just what i've been looking for.

yet im such a hypocrite cuz as i'm telling the guy at the photo counter that i got this camera to take a vacation from my digital life, i ask him if he can include a CD of the pics so i can put them online... ha!

well, the boyfriends in italy til sunday... yes i miss him much... but am going to take this time to do what i've been putting off for whatever reason. Here is my "while bf is away" to-do list:

1. collage something, damnit! I haven't done art in a while. haven't really felt inspired, i guess...
2. have ladies night with sue (dad's gf of 3 yrs. who's probably the coolest woman ever)
3. clean out both my closets (to make room for the lil shopping spree i did on saturday to cope with my jealousy that eric is in milan and i am not - love you!) and take old clothes to buffalo exchange in hopes of getting some kind of monetary amount in return... maybe i can get a skirt for the bags of clothes i am giving them... sounds fair.
4. finish up my dad's logo and stationary package. poor guy has had the same business cards for about 30 years now. salmon and mint colored... priceless
5. hopefully get my new u.o. curtains this week and put those up. waking up to just a curtain rod above my window for 3 months is darn depressing
6. organize my itunes. it's been a mess for a while... thus the reason why ive been listening to the same 5% of my music over and over again
7. detox - so ya, when you have a boyfriend, you kinda eat what they eat. they eat whatever they want... as much as they want. they have fast metabolisms and never gain a pound... and they also conveniently love carbs and sweet treats... and now, so do i... just trying to keep up with my man. The last thing i want is to be 'that girl' that only orders salads. but ya, i feel gross so i am taking this week to detox my body of all things processed. maybe a lose a few pounds too??? :D (fingers crossed)... but i gotta admit, i miss my morning cereal...

getting inspiration from an artist is one thing, but stealing their style is something else.

san diego: atop the st. james historic building. we discovered this hidden gem while atop the ivy across the street. their rooftop bar/lounge was crowded and the drinks were ridiculous. we look out and see that OUR hotel has its own rooftop... secluded, as if no one knows about it.

as if HEALTH and a CLEAR CONSCIENCE weren't enough reasons for me to go veg, now i find out there are huge environmental reasons, too:

we all know that global warming is a pretty big deal... but did you know that, along with a gripload of other negative effects farmed animals have on the environment, one that struck a cord with me was that they produce more greenhouse gas emissions (18%) (a.k.a their farts and poo... ya, i said it) than the world's ENTIRE TRANSPORT SYSTEM (13.5%)?! ...you kiddin' me.

and as if you really need ANOTHER reason: 16 pounds of grain and more than 5,000 gallons of water are needed to produce ONE SINGLE FREAKIN' POUND of meat. think of how many people that food and water could feed.

when is the man ever gonna understand that we, CREATIVES, cannot be held down by rules and guidelines and corporate policies and all that jazz... and still be able to creatively soar ~ to produce creative results under such rigid parameters. one can't fly if its wings are clipped.

help us help you. we know that we may stroll into work late on some days, or be caught surfing myspace or ffffound.com ... or even spending too much time playing ms. pacman or tron. but this is all part of the CREATIVE PROCESS. we need to do these stretches in order to stay creatively LIMBER... to do our best work FOR YOU, the man. if you can't understand that and insist on keeping us boxed in in your left-brained world, then you are going to get creative SHIT presented to you come deadline time... trust me!

'let it go, let it flow'. the work always gets done, you know that! and the more freedom we have, the better work we will produce. this is our passion and it is not a 8-5 job for us. it is a 24/7 job... creatively speaking. we never stop creating in our minds.

my office is finally feeling this. we each got sketchbooks and utensils for doodling to fuel our creativity and to keep us on the up and up. this is how i decided to decorate the cover of mine (simple and beautiful). this is comin' straight out of the depths of my soul... where i strongly feel that something in the workplace needs to change DRASTICALLY for creatives ~ and fast!

lately i've been noticing that momma earth is appreciated MOSTLY by only the CHILDREN of the earth... (children are brilliant!). but what i have also been noticing is CHANGE... finally! ADULTS are starting to learn from these children, realizing that life's happiness lies in the little things... the little beauties.

this image is precious (of course i have the need to turn everything into an art piece). it reminds me that we are all born with a love and affinity for momma earth, our planet, our HOME. it is full of beauty EVERYWHERE and mostly we just pass by it on our way to 'something more important'. but not the little ones, oh no. they see what we USED to see.

experience life like a child again. love and appreciate this place NOW, so that our planet can have all the love it needs to come back to life and RADIATE to its fullest potential. then say a little thank you and go on about your day.

as i lay in my bed, with the windows open, i close my eyes and breathe in byproducts of the burning earth surrounding me. the smell is all around ... i am engulfed. it feels thick in my lungs and burns my eyes. in today's world, fire is not seen as a good thing. it is seen as a 'natural DISASTER' - a tragedy. yes, fire destroys what comes in its path... however, a different perspective: fire is necessary for growth.

there are many fires that have started in my life right now that are burning the old and making room for the new... the glorious unknown. we cannot allow for new, great things to happen to us until we have cremated all that is dead in our lives that we have refused to let go of.

looking forward to what is going to take place of those ashes... but man, it burns!

tomorrow we move our design studio to long beach... where i will be farther away from my favorite new lunch joint, good mood food cafe, where they have the tastiest vegan and raw dishes around! and i mean the tastiest! those vegans, man... they are some creative people. i ordered the pizza roma (pictured here) and savored every last bite.
